Lenovo Ideapad S110 may be blazing the Cedar Trail, ditching netbook moniker

Between the line of Cedar Trail notebooks marching their way through the FCC and Intel's recent shipping announcement, it's high time manufacturers started parading out next year's kits. Today's tease hails from Lenovo, which has outed the Ideapad S110 in no less than four fabulous colors. Although the outfit's promo video doesn't touch on hardware specs, a Pro Vantage product page claims the setup sports an Intel Atom 2600 processor. The self titled "mini notebook" features a 10.1-inch "HD display," presumably rocking the same 720p resolution as the rig's optional 2 megapixel webcam, if not the full 1080p Intel says the N2600 supports. Buyers will also be able to opt for an optional 3G radio, though USB 3.0, Lenovo quick start "instant on," and a 98-percent full-size chicklet keyboard all come standard. The video didn't pack an official press release, but we hear there's a major trade show right around the corner that's just perfect for announcing products.

Mitt Romney: Winning, One Slogan at a Time (Time.com)

As Mitt Romney enters the final stretch in Iowa, poll numbers rising, crowds appearing, the inevitability beginning to sink in, his message is honed down, lean and mean, with declarative sentences that slice the air with the flashy precision of a fruit ninja. "I love this country," he says, as if this sets him apart. Then he adds, "I don't want America to turn into Europe."

No, Romney continues, "I want to make America work again." Then he elaborates. "I want to get America working again for the middle class." Those are subtle digs at the sitting President. But Romney is not trying to be subtle. "I'm frightened that we have a President that doesn't understand America," he says in Clinton, Iowa, on Wednesday afternoon. "He's had his moment. Now is our time." And then: "He will transform America. I will restore America." (Watch TIME's video "Mark Halperin Interviews Mitt Romney.")

Everything Romney says is built for repetition, to be quoted in newspapers, in televised soundbites and seared into the national psyche. Everything is a catchphrase, a bumper sticker waiting to be printed. The lines make tweets feel long. "I don't want class warfare to poison the American spirit," he continues. He says Obama wants an "entitlement society" and Romney wants an "opportunity society." He adds, "I don't want to substitute envy for ambition."

In Clinton, Muscatine and North Liberty, the crowds are not huge -- in the low hundreds -- but they overflow the small spaces Romney has booked for the events. On his second ride in the presidential campaign rodeo, the candidate no longer has to worry about introducing himself. He no longer bothers to assure voters that he is more conservative than they suspect on issues like guns, abortion and gay rights. He is a singularly focused, Obama-destroying machine. "People in Washington think it's government that makes us strong," he says. "It's free people pursuing our dreams that makes us great."

Romney's is an effective presentation, convincing in its single-minded message. The crowds eat it up. These people want what he is promising, after all: to get rid of the sitting President. And no other candidate has yet shown that he or she can compete with Romney's general election competitiveness. They want to win. Romney seems to have Obama's number. "Democrats are scared," says Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock, who introduces Romney at campaign events.

But the very effectiveness of Romney's presentation make the awkward moments that much more striking. He greets a group of seniors eating an Italian lunch in Clinton with the phrases, "Ooh, dinner looks good. I like the pizza. I like the pizza." Or when he opens a town hall at a factory in North Liberty with a comment on the platform he is standing on. "This thing I am standing on is one of the pieces of machinery, a tool, that helps them make the various products they make out of various forms of plastic," he says. When someone in the audience mentions Denver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow's religious displays, Romney responds earnestly, "I appreciate people who are willing to stand up for their differences." (Read "Mitt Romney: A Candidate's Rhetorical Evolution.")

And then there is his talk about song. He praises God Bless America. Discusses the national anthem. Repeats the lesser known verses of America the Beautiful, which he calls, "Oh, Beautiful for Spacious skies." "Does corn qualify as amber waves of grain?" he asks off the cuff. "Not really. But you get the point."

The audience does. This is an Obama toppler before them. He talks of an epic battle for the "core" of the country. "I want America to be more like America, again," he declares. And the voters are coming around, he predicts, in Iowa, in New Hampshire, in swing states across the country. Obama's days are numbered, Romney assures the crowds: "They are going to send him back to the private sector where he finally deserves to go."

Put it on a card. Hang it on your wall. Repeat every night before bedtime. This presidency is going to end. Romney's slogans will make it so.

Forest fire cuts across vast Chilean national park (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? Chilean President Sebastian Pinera says an out-of-control fire has already burned 32 square miles (8,500 hectares) of a national park in the nation's south, and it has prompted the evacuation of 400 tourists.

The president interrupted a summer vacation to meet with top aides on Friday about how to respond to the conflagration at the Torres del Paine National Park, which receives tens of thousands of foreign visitors each year.

He says "the terrain in the area is extraordinarily rough and that enormously complicates access and work." Gusts as strong as 70 mph (120 kph) also have fanned the fire.

Program Helps Women With Post-Cancer Fatigue - Health News ...

POSTED: 11:54 am EST December 26, 2011
UPDATED: 1:53 pm EST December 26, 2011

One of the big complaints of cancer patients who have gone through surgery and chemo is that, even a couple years after the fact, there is overwhelming fatigue and not being able to feel like their old selves. As WBAL?s Donna Hamilton reported in Monday?s Woman?s Doctor, there is a program to help women with that. It?s called Be Well, Stay Healthy. Lisa Horton, a 55-year-old pediatrician, went through a mastectomy, chemo and breast reconstruction in late 2007 and early 2008. She couldn?t shake the fatigue.?It was beginning to affect how much work I could get done,? Horton said. ?It was affecting my social life, and I couldn't understand why I was still tired.? Mercy Medical Center Dr. Kath Helzlsouer said that?s a common complaint after cancer. A pilot study was done on ways to get energy back, and it reduced fatigue by almost 40 percent. ?It was quite an impact,? Helzlsouer said. ?It was better than any other intervention we have out there, including depression and mood too. It was quite an impact.?The program deals with the mind-body connection and includes teaching exercise ideas, group support, diet and taking time for one?s self.?People know what they need to do, it?s how do you go about doing it,? Helzlsouer said. ?So exercise is an important thing to do to reduce fatigue. And it's also important for weight control, and weight is a problem a lot of women have, especially with chemotherapy.?The program struck a chord with Horton, who said she previously shied away from the camera.?I lost 70 pounds. I exercise three to five days a week,? she said. ?If I miss it, I feel it. I'm not obsessed with exercise. It's just a part of what I do.?She called what has happened a metamorphosis and said she feels healthier than she did at 26 years old.The Be Well, Stay Healthy program is free and is recommended for cancer patients after they?ve completed treatment.Anyone can attend, not just patients at Mercy, Hamilton said.

Iran Prepares to Tighten Military Links with Iraq

Iran stands ready to expand its military and security ties with Iraq, its armed forces chief of staff said Sunday, a week after the exit of US forces from the neighbouring Arab country.

General Hassan Firouzabadi hailed the "forced departure" of the US and allied forces that he said "was due to the resistance and determination of the Iraqi people and government," the state Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The statements were made in messages Firouzabadi sent to his Iraqi counterpart, Lieutenant General Babaker Zebari, and to Iraq's acting defence minister, Saadun al-Dulaimi, IRNA said.

The departure of the US troops "was due to the resistance and determination of the Iraqi people and government," he said.

"I hope the humiliating failure of the United States after nine years of occupying Iraq will serve as a lesson for them to never think of attacking another country," he said.

Firouzabadi added that Iran was now "ready to expand its military and security ties with Iraq."

Zebari led a delegation of Iraqi military chiefs to Iran last month to explore greater cooperation between the two defence forces.

US analysts have expressed concern that Iran could exploit the vacuum left by the US withdrawal to bolster links with Iraq's Shiite-led government.

The United States frequently accused Iran of arming Iraqi militias that attacked US forces when they were deployed there.

US President Barack Obama said on December 14 that, while the situation left behind in Iraq was not perfect, "we are leaving behind a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq."

His administration has warned Iran against trying to interfere in Iraq.

How You Can Log Into Windows 8 by Touching Pictures

Beware of smudges on your future Windows 8 machine.

With new login methods such as Face Unlock or the pattern from Android, typing in a password seems so last-decade. Microsoft feels the same way and will be adding a new way to log into Windows 8.

Microsoft's Jeff Johnson, the Director of Development for the User Experience team, followed up on this with a blog post on the B8 blog with some recommendations for best practices for those who plan to use this login method:

  • Pick a photo that has at least 10 points of interest. A point of interest is an area that can serve as a landmark for a gesture ? a point that you would touch, places you would connect with a line, an area you would circle.
  • Use a random mixture of gesture types and sequence. While a line is the gesture that has the most permutations, if you always use 3 lines, that actually makes it easier for an attacker, as they can rule out trying sequences with the other gesture types.
  • If you choose to use a tap, a line, and a circle, randomly choose the order of those gestures; this creates 6 times the number of combinations as a predictable order.
  • For circle gestures, randomly choose whether you draw it clockwise or counterclockwise. Also consider making the size of the circle bigger or smaller than the ?expected? size.
  • For line gestures, your instinct may be to always draw from left to right, but it is more secure if you randomly choose the direction with which you connect the two points.
  • As with all forms of authentication, when entering your picture password, avoid allowing other people to watch you as you sign in.
  • Keep your computer in a secure location where unauthorized people do not have physical access to it.? As with any password entry, be aware of line of sight and potential recording devices that intrude on your screen.
  • Be aware that smudges on the screen could potentially identify your gestures. Clean your screen thoroughly on a regular basis. Although this increases the risk if you clean, sign in, and then do nothing, the buildup of oils from repeated use is generally easier for an attacker to see (plus, who likes using an oily device?). Note that buildup is more of an issue for entering numeric PINs, when the device is frequently turned on and off and you enter the sequence dozens of times a day (oils can build up in those locations). Periodically look at your screen at an oblique angle while on the picture password login screen and see if there appears to be a pattern pointing to your gesture sequence. If so, either clean your screen or add a handful of additional smudges in the picture password area (which effectively increases the POIs discussed below
    ?

Ed Roman, renowned guitar builder, dies at 61 (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? As a guitar-maker for the stars, Ed Roman found a platform for fierce opinions about his commercially manufactured competition, exhorting musicians to drop what he called "misdirected ignorant brand loyalty."

His own guitars found their way into the hands of everyone from Ted Nugent to British rockers Eric Burdon of The Animals and John Entwistle of The Who. Roman, sometimes likened to a Viking for his red hair, was unafraid to unleash self-described politically incorrect opinions about foreign-made products, chain stores and corporate guitar manufacturers.

But his daughter remembers a soft side to his big, brash personality. She remembers him taking care of her pet hamster, letting the critter roll around in a plastic ball amid an office brimming with expensive guitars.

"He had a very kind, gentle heart," Lindsey Star Roman said.

Roman died Dec. 14 at his home following an illness, his daughter said. He was 61.

"He's going to be remembered with a smile. He made everyone laugh," she told the Associated Press Thursday. "And he's certainly going to be immortalized through his guitars."

Roman, whose critiques found an outlet on the voluminous "Guitar Rants" section of his personal website, started playing the instrument as a youth in Stamford, Conn. His inspiration was Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Ventures, a prolific instrumental combo most active in the 1960s.

Roman worked on motorcycles before turning to guitar building in 1976, because "he always wanted to make something better," his daughter said.

"He was fortunate to meet most of his heroes," she said.

Roman, tired of East Coast winters and observing that "everyone eventually comes to Vegas," moved to Las Vegas in 2000 and opened a large shop there in 2001, according to his daughter.

His time in Sin City brought him ? and his wide range of custom guitars ? close to other famous musicians, including Marie Osmond and country musician Keith Urban.

Also a singer and a bassist, Roman was in the process of recording albums of his own before his unexpected death last week.

Roman's Las Vegas store remains open. In lieu of a funeral, a memorial concert is planned for Roman's birthday, Feb. 24.

Protesting villagers in China win rare compromise (AP)

BEIJING ? Southern Chinese authorities have given in to key demands of protesting villagers after a nearly two-week standoff with police, agreeing in a rare compromise to release detainees and return some confiscated land to farmers.

Guangdong's deputy Communist Party secretary Zhu Mingguo told Wukan village protest leader Yang Semao on Wednesday that four villagers being held by police would be released over the next few days, Yang told The Associated Press.

"So now we are cautiously optimistic," Yang said.

The significance of the authorities' unusual concession in Wukan depends on how the details are played out, but it could affect the way other protests are handled, particularly in the corner of coastal southern China that has seen periodic unrest over the last few years. To Wukan's northeast, the coastal town of Haimen saw a second day of protests Wednesday over a planned coal-fired power plant.

Conflicts over land disputes and other issues in much of Guangdong province have been intense because the area is among China's most economically developed, pushing up land prices.

Underscoring the government's concerns about public discontent, China's security czar Zhou Yongkang met Wednesday with law and order officials and told them to improve the resolution of social conflicts and promote fair and honest law enforcement, state media reported.

In Wukan, Zhu, the provincial official, also told Yang and another village representative that the government would buy back 66 acres (27 hectares) of farmland that had been sold to a developer and return the land to the villagers, Yang said.

There is more farmland that has been sold and is not yet accounted for, Yang said, but he added that he thought the issue would be fairly addressed by higher authorities.

"I believe that the central government is attaching great importance to this incident and they won't let us down and they won't tolerate the lower-level officials' irresponsibility," Yang said.

Wukan, a village of nearly 20,000, has for months been the site of simmering protests by locals who say officials sold farmland to developers without their consent. Villagers drove out local officials and police almost two weeks ago after key village representatives were taken away.

One of the detainees later died in police custody, further angering villagers, who believe he was beaten. Authorities say Xue Jinbo died of cardiac failure. In another concession, Zhu agreed to launch a new investigation into Xue's death, Yang said.

In a further sign that tensions were easing, police withdrew Tuesday night from road checkpoints they had set up, while villagers removed the tree trunks they had used to block the road, Yang said.

The reasons for the provincial government's apparently softer approach in the Wukan dispute are unclear, but it marks a dramatic turnaround from days past.

Up until Wednesday, officials had employed intimidation tactics common in such disputes. Riot police raided the village two weeks ago and took away leaders and set up road blocks to prevent food from being transported in. Officials blamed the unrest on "foreign forces" and threatened to crack down on protest leaders.

But the villagers refused to be cowed and issued an ultimatum at the start of the week, saying they would march to the government offices of the nearby city of Lufeng on Wednesday if authorities did not meet their demands. That would have been a direct challenge to police who have set up checkpoints on main roads outside the village.

Yang said the march was called off after the meeting with the provincial official. "Since Zhu gave us a good answer, we should give him some face," he said.

In the town of Haimen, a large group of protesters blocked a highway and set trees on both sides of the road on fire on Wednesday to demand a response from the government to their demands to stop the construction of a coal-fired power plant, said one of the protesters, a man surnamed Yu.

It was the second day of protests in the seaside town. In response to Tuesday's protests, the local government said it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, according to a report by the local Shantou Daily newspaper which could not be immediately verified.

Protesters were also enraged by reports that two had died during clashes with police Tuesday. A man at the Shantou government office surnamed Wu said no one had died and refused to answer any more questions.

On Wednesday, riot police, paramilitary police and firefighters used tear gas and electric batons to try to break up the protest on the highway, said another protester, a 20-year-old woman named Yang Wanqing.

"We're not afraid, we don't care about their warnings," Yang said by phone. "We are not just thinking about the present, we are worrying about our future. In the future the pollution from the plant will be very bad."

Apple lands jab to Android with legal victory over HTC (Digital Trends)

HTC Droid Incredible

The U.S. International Trade Commission has handed Apple a partial victory in its patent infringement litigation against Taiwanese phone maker HTC, ruling that HTC phones violate a single Apple patent related to detecting data items within otherwise unformatted content. Along with the ruling, the ITC has issued a limited import exclusion order (PDF) that will go into effect on April 19, barring the import of infringing phones into the United States.

Although the ITC?s decision is less than the sweeping ban on HTC Android devices Apple sought, the ruling still marks a significant victory in Apple?s escalating battle with Android, which Apple co-founder Steve Jobs characterized as a ?stolen product.? However, the net impact of the decision may be non-existent in the U.S. market: HTC has until April 19 to get non-infringing phones into its distribution pipeline, and the company confirms via email that it will remove the infringing technology from its phones soon, and anticipates there won?t be any disruption in the availability of HTC phones in the U.S. market. HTC is also widely expected to appeal the ruling.

The Apple patent in question (US 5,946,647) has to do with ?data detectors,? algorithms that can recognize things like phone numbers, email addresses, Web site names, and other actionable data items within an otherwise unstructured document like an email message. HTC has likely dodged a bullet by having not been found to have infringed on another patent, the much-broader ?263 patent named in the case covering aspects of signal processing.

HTC is currently the second-largest maker of Android phones; Apple?s patent infringement case against HTC is widely viewed as a proxy battle over Android, rather than suing Google directly. Apple has a second complaint against HTC pending before the International Trade Commission, claiming other HTC smartphones and the company?s Flyer tablet infringe on five patents regarding user interface and software design. Similarly, HTC has countersued Apple with two cases of its own before the ITC; one is still pending, but the ITC ruled in Apple?s favor on the other.

South Korean President urges stability in North

AP In this December 19, 2011 photo, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak speaks during an emergency meeting of the National Security Council over North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's death at the presidential house in Seoul.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is urging stability in North Korea and says his country?s frontline troops remain on alert.

South Korea put its troops on high alert Monday after the death of Kim Jong-il. The presidential Blue House says Mr. Lee made the comments on Thursday in a meeting with legislators.

All signs out of North Korea suggest the transition of power to Kim Jong-il?s son is going smoothly. U.S. and South Korean officials are seeing no unusual troop movements and no buildup around the heavily fortified border.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said that as of Wednesday the U.S. military has not seen any unusual military movements by the North Koreans.

Fitch may cut France, 6 other euro zone countries (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Fitch Ratings on Friday warned it may downgrade France and six other euro zone countries as it believes that a comprehensive solution to the region's debt crisis is "technically and politically beyond reach."

France's possible downgrade is not imminent but could come in two years, Fitch said, as it revised the outlook to the country's AAA rating to negative.

For the other countries - Belgium, Cyprus, Ireland, Italy, Slovenia and Spain - a downgrade could come much faster. Those nations, which already had a negative rating outlook, were placed on credit watch negative, which traditionally signals the possibility of a downgrade within three months.

"The systemic nature of the euro zone crisis is having a profoundly adverse effect on economic and financial stability across the region," Fitch said in a statement.

Romo throws for 3 TDs, runs for another in first half of 31-15 victory

Image: Tony RomoAP

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo throws a pass over Buccaneers middle linebacker Mason Foster during the second quarter Saturday night.

updated 11:44 p.m. ET Dec. 17, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. - Tony Romo was nearly flawless in getting the Dallas Cowboys back on track in the NFC East.

Romo threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth score Saturday night, helping the first-place Cowboys beat the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-15.

Dallas stopped a two-game losing streak in which it blew fourth-quarter leads to allow a seemingly solid grip on the division lead slip away.

The victory gave the Cowboys (8-6) a half-game lead over New York. Although the Giants hold a tiebreaker advantage after beating Dallas 37-34 last week, the Cowboys can claim the division title and host a playoff game by finishing with wins the next two weeks over Philadelphia at home and the Giants on the road.

The Bucs (4-10) lost for the eighth straight time and played a miserable first half that certainly didn't do anything to help coach Raheem Morris make a case for keeping his job.

Romo threw a pair of 8-yard TD passes to Miles Austin and Dez Bryant in the first quarter, then finished a seven-play, 89-yard drive with a 9-yarder to Laurent Robinson to make it 21-0 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Romo made it 28-0 on a quarterback sneak in the closing seconds of the opening half.

Click for related content

Tampa Bay managed just one first down and was outgained 279 yards to 55 in the first two quarters, but found a way to make it interesting in the second half.

The Bucs, who had had yielded 69 consecutive points dating to the second quarter of the previous week's 41-14 loss to Jacksonville, finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when rookie Adrian Clayborn sacked Romo from behind, forcing a fumble that linebacker Dekoda Watson returned 4 yards for a TD for a much-needed spark.

Josh Freeman's 13-yard TD pass to Dezmon Briscoe and a two-point conversion throw to Kellen Winslow trimmed the Dallas lead to 31-15 heading into the final quarter.

The Cowboys have led in the fourth quarter in five of their six losses, however there wouldn't be a late collapse this time. Tampa Bay turned the ball over on downs twice in the last six minutes, and Sammy Morris picked up a first down inside the Bucs 10 to give the Cowboys an opportunity to run out the clock.

Austin's TD midway through the first quarter was set up by Tampa Bay's NFL-leading 32nd turnover, a fumble by Freeman on the fifth play of the game.

The Tampa Bay quarterback scrambled 25 yards on third-and-5 to march the Bucs near midfield, but the opening possession of the night came to an abrupt halt on the next play when Freeman took off again for a 7-yard gain and was stripped of the ball at the Cowboys 44.

Linebacker Bradie James recovered and it took Romo seven plays to get Dallas in the end zone for the first time. The Cowboys marched 69 yards in 10 plays on their next possession, with Romo finishing the drive by finding a wide-open Bryant in the back of the end zone to make it 14-0.

In three career games against Tampa Bay ? all lopsided victories ? Romo has thrown for 908 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. He was 23 of 30 for 249 yards and was sacked twice Saturday night.

Felix Jones, back in the starting lineup after DeMarco Murray broke his right ankle last week in a 37-34 loss to the Giants, broke a 38-yard run on the drive leading to Robinson's TD and finished with 108 yards on 22 carries ? his second straight 100-yard performance had 67 yards rushing on 12 carries at halftime.

Freeman, making his second start since missing a game because of an injured throwing shoulder, was 17 of 27 for 148 yards and no interceptions. He led the Bucs in rushing with 37 yards on four attempts and was sacked three times, once by DeMarcus Ware, who notched his 16th of the season.

Thanks to a large contingent of Cowboys fans, the Bucs played before a sellout crowd at home for just the second time in two seasons. Judging by all the blue and white jerseys scattered throughout the 65,000-seat stadium, at least half the house appeared to be rooting for Dallas.

The Bucs have lost eight straight following a 4-2 start that included wins over NFC South rivals New Orleans and Atlanta. The skid has coach Raheem Morris on the hot seat just a year after the NFL's youngest head coach led his team to a surprising 10-6 finish that heightened expectations coming into this season.

Tampa Bay played Saturday night without starting receiver Arrelious Benn, who suffered a concussion during last week's loss at Jacksonville. He was replaced by Briscoe, who began the night with just 23 receptions yet shared the team lead in touchdown catches with three.

Truck Insurance What To Consider When Looking For A Policy

Truck insurance is a necessity in the transport and motoring sector. According to the Department of Transport (DOT), most truck operations base the purchase of their insurance coverage on the cost factor. This cannot be entirely blamed on the trucking company since the insurance agents who sell these policies structure them following the same criteria. This is a dangerous approach especially in light of the amount of investment that goes into a trucking operation. Just like is the case when buying other products and services, it is important to consider the quality of the truck insurance package.

Things To Consider When Buying Truck Insurance

? Emergency expenses.

? Combined deductibles.

? Rental reimbursement.

? The coverage limit for towing.

? Coverage for personal effects.

? Accurate and quick filing procedures.

? Accurate and expedited issuance of insurance certificates.

? Detailed and accurate information on insurance accounting

Insurance brokers as well as the insurance policies that they sell usually vary a lot. It is important to carry out a thorough research before settling on any one insurance policy. This way, you will be assured of getting the best insurance coverage for your trucks.

Options For Truck Insurance

Truck InsuranceTruck operators have several options as concerns insurance payment plans and coverage. The coverage and payment plans are divided into various segments depending on the following fleet sizes.
Group I which comprises of 20-50 units.
Group II which comprises of 51-100 units.
Group III comprising of 101-500 units.
Group IV comprising of more than 500 units.
All these alternatives involve different payment plans which cater for varying trucking insurance needs. Trucking companies that fall into group I and II have fleet policies based on mileage, gross revenue and vehicle schedules. Each of these options has their own advantages and disadvantages. Policies based on gross revenues have premium rates averaging 3 percent which are applied to the generated monthly revenues. In this case, the premium follows the income, a situation which allows for optimum cash flow. These policies are ideal for a growing fleet that may wish to add tracks without necessary having to pay higher premiums for the new units.

Policies based on mileage are ideal for trucking operations that have put systems in place for tracking their accumulated mileage. There should be no wide fluctuations in the driven mileage since this will result in higher premiums which will ultimately mean that you will have to pay more for your policy. These policies make use of an estimation mileage which should leave an allowance for some form of growth i.e. it should not be too rigid. Just like the gross revenue policies, these policies also allow for the addition of additional trucks without necessary resulting in premium payment hikes.

Vehicle schedule policies are ideal for trucking operations that have smaller fleets of say less than 75 units. Such truck fleets have minimal amount of truck changes. Their monthly vehicle reports are based on a monthly unit premium which gets rid of gross revenue or mileage reporting. Any premium increase as a result of sudden increase in revenues and mileage is therefore eliminated. This policy option unlike the other two options doesn?t allow for the subtle addition of tracking units without increasing the cost of premium.
Trucking companies that fall into the III and IV groups are generally interested in various forms of risk sharing which are based on the results of their claims. These trucking companies reduce their truck insurance costs by taking part in the process of claims. This they do through the acceptance of Self Insurance Retention (SIR) or the placement of liability deductibles. SIR brings the trucking company directly the process of making claims.

Deciphering The Numerous Truck Insurance

Almost all trucking companies or truckers in the US concur that truck insurance is the largest fixed business expense that they face. Trucking insurance is one business aspect that companies are obliged to monitor closely so that they can ensure all their insurance needs are taken care of. Insurance costs are impacted by numerous factors such as:
? Truck age.

? Commodities hauled.

? Driver?s age.

? Vehicle location
? Radius.

? Loss history.

? Years of practicing business.

Types Of Truck Insurance

? Physical damage- this protects the trailer as well as the truck. The premium for this type of truck insurance is wholly dependent on a percentage of the equipment?s value. According to US law, this type of insurance coverage is not mandatory.

? Primary auto liability- this type of truck insurance is mandatory under US federal regulations. Rigs are supposed to have liability insurance even when they are leased. Liability insurance takes care of third party injuries in the event of a road mishap.

? Non-trucking liability- caters for accidents caused by trucks or drivers that are not under dispatch. This type of coverage is usually referred to as bobtail liability or deadhead coverage.

? Non-owned trailer liability- protects a trailer that is being pulled.
? Non-owned trailer physical damage- provides insurance coverage for a trailer that is being pulled. The standard amount is $20,000.

? Trailer-interchange liability- protects trailers in transit especially where an interchange agreement is in force.

? Cargo insurance- this coverage takes care of freight loss or damage especially during transit. This insurance coverage has several exclusions such as maximum limitations on theft especially on target commodities like electronics and liquor as well as unattended vehicles.

? Terminal coverage- this coverage protects loss of freight especially freight stored in specific terminals. It comes with time limitations such as 72 hours per load. Should the goods due for tracking take more than the stipulated terminal time in the warehouse, it would be most advisable to take warehouse coverage.

? Warehouse coverage- this protects goods that are up for transportation and which are stored in a terminal location especially in the event of a loss. This coverage caters for losses that would arise from sprinkler damage, fire and theft and usually has its premiums pegged on the amount and value of goods stored in a particular terminal location. Hopefully this helps you find the best truck insurance for whatever you do.

France hands Carlos the Jackal another life prison term (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? A French court sentenced flamboyant Marxist militant Carlos the Jackal to another life prison term on Thursday for bomb attacks that killed 11 people nearly three decades ago.

The Venezuelan defendant, 62, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, has been locked up in France for almost 20 years serving a life sentence in a separate case for killing two police officers and an informant in Paris in 1975.

Sentencing Ramirez to an additional life term, the special terrorism court in Paris made up of seven magistrates said he should serve a minimum of 18 years in jail.

The verdict could push back the date on which he can apply for conditional release, currently set for 2012.

Defense lawyers called the decision a scandal and said their client would file an appeal.

Ramirez was accused of masterminding four separate attacks in France on two trains, a train station and a Paris street that killed 11 people and wounded nearly 200.

Prosecutors said the bombings were his answer to the police seizure of two of his gang, including his lover, and had argued that he remained a danger to the public.

Earlier on Thursday, Ramirez - once one of the most wanted international criminals - addressed the court in a five-hour monologue, alternately rambling, vitriolic and poignant, calling himself a "living martyr" in defending his innocence.

Ramirez, a self-dubbed "elite gunman," appeared resigned to a guilty verdict. Death in prison, he said at one point, "is the role of a revolutionary."

"I am in prison ... condemned in a pre-decided case," he told the court, his voice rising in volume.

SHADES OF CHE GUEVARA

Ramirez, a colorful figure recognizable at the height of his fame by his Che Guevara-style beret, sunglasses and Havana cigars, sealed his notoriety in a bloody hostage-taking of OPEC oil ministers in 1975.

During the Cold War he received backing from Soviet bloc and Middle Eastern countries, staging attacks throughout Europe for more than two decades before being captured in Sudan in 1994.

During the six-week trial, Ramirez appeared more like a master of ceremonies than a defendant, talking over speakers, interrupting judges, correcting lawyers and occasionally beaming benevolently from his caged-in defendant's box.

He denied any specific involvement in the four bombings in 1982 and 1983 on a Paris street, two trains and a Marseille train station that wounded nearly 200 people and left 11 dead. Prosecutors say the bombings were Ramirez's answer to the police seizure of two of his gang, including his lover.

"There is nothing ... to connect me with these four attacks," he told the court, making a zero sign with his thumb and index finger.

Like a modern-day Scheherazade, Ramirez wove story after story, often smiling and waxing nostalgic about former comrades, and sometimes turning fiery to rail at the system.

His unrelenting discourse touched on a variety of topics, from prison life to Zionist strategy, Soviet passports, the French state, hashish and even the death penalty.

Ramirez broke down, his powerful voice wavering when, at the end of his speech, he read from what he said was the last will of fallen Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"I will continue the fight," he read from the text, before breaking off, overcome with emotion. A group of about a dozen youths in the courtroom audience raised their fists in the air, shouting encouragement at Ramirez.

"Salam Alaikum," or "Peace be with you," said Ramirez, who converted to Islam while in prison, before giving a final fist in the air to the crowd.

MAN OF COMBAT

Accused of being a gun-for-hire by his opponents, and a cold-blooded killer by a former cohort turned witness against him, Ramirez introduced himself on the first day of the trial as "a revolutionary by profession."

Casting himself as a convenient scapegoat, he questioned why no one had ever been arrested in France for the attacks. He and his lawyers said the evidence in the case was based on unreliable witnesses and photocopies of documents from Eastern European secret service archives.

Clearly enjoying the limelight, Ramirez displayed a fondness for name-dropping, variously citing a cast of historical and modern-day heads of state from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Soviet leader Stalin to former French president Jacques Chirac, mentioning the latter's guilty verdict given in the same courthouse earlier in the day.

He explained to the court the proper way to load a 9-millimeter pistol, correcting a prosecutor's knowledge of how many bullets such a gun holds.

"You really aren't a man of combat," he told him.

Prosecutors had argued Ramirez remains a public danger and demanded he be sentenced to an additional life term and serve a minimum of 18 years.
